Junior Golf
A vibrant, inclusive programme nurturing the next generation of golfers through expert coaching, structured development, and a love for the game.
Junior Programme
Athlone Golf Club’s Junior Programme is a thriving initiative with over 230 young players, expertly led by Gerry Brennan. Notably inclusive, it welcomes nearly 90 girls aged between 8 and 18, and is committed to fostering a supportive, enjoyable environment where juniors can develop their skills and a lasting love for the game.
Structure and Coaching
Running from March to November, sessions take place on Saturday evenings at the Athlone Driving Range. Under the guidance of Head Professional Kevin Greally, juniors follow a structured pathway:
- Driving Range Coaching – Beginners receive expert tuition to build solid fundamentals and confidence.
- 6s Format – Once ready, players pair up to play 6 holes from 150 metres in a scramble format, promoting teamwork and strategic play.
- 9s Format – As players progress, they move to 9 holes from 200 metres. Here, they can secure a club handicap and begin playing from beginner (green), red (ladies), or yellow (boys) tees.
Competitive Pathway and Golf Education
When a junior reaches a handicap of under 20, they become eligible to compete in men’s competitions from the white tees. Throughout their journey, players receive guidance on rules, etiquette, and sportsmanship—ensuring they grow as both golfers and individuals.
Summer Activities
The programme expands in summer with additional Friday morning coaching at the range, Saturday evening competitions on the course, and Monday morning coaching and competitive events—offering a well-rounded balance of skill development and play.
A Pathway to Lifelong Golf
This structured, inclusive programme supports juniors at every level, aiming to develop not only skilled golfers, but confident and respectful club members who can represent Athlone at underage and senior levels. The club is proud of its junior players and looks forward to their continued success.
